Learn How to Grow A Small Business Online in 2019

Are you trying to grow a small business but failing? Are you having trouble generating leads? Have you struggled in the past with getting sales? That’s okay. Many business owners tend to feel lost and don’t know how to grow a small business.

In 2019, many businesses are falling behind because business is moving online and their business owners aren’t well versed in digital marketing. Competitors are increasing visibility and growth online through the use of digital marketing strategies. Because of this, they’re leaving your business in the dust.

So, exactly how do you grow a small business in this rapidly evolving digital age? In this article, we are going to show you exactly how to grow a small business into a large business and what online strategies you should add to your small business. So, what are these 3 online strategies? Let’s get started!

1. Create an Up to Date Website

Believe it or not, there are businesses out there without a website. Many businesses think they have a website, but it’s likely just a placeholder or a landing page. This isn’t going to cut it in 2019 and the years moving forward.

A website is an extension of your business on the internet. It is your first representative on the web. Think of your website as the storefront of your business but on the internet.

A website comes with many benefits. More than I can count on two hands. I actually wrote an article recently breaking down the top 11 benefits that a website can bring to a business that you can check out here.

How to Get Started

There are many options to consider when choosing how to create a website for your small business.

You could hire a professional web designer or choose from the many free website builder platforms out there such as WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace to name a few. My favorite is WordPress. Actually, the website you’re reading this blog post on right now was made with WordPress.

Now, there a few things to consider. Do you want to spend the money to pay a designer to design a website for you or do you want to spend the time to learn how to design a website on one of these website platforms? The choice is yours. Regardless, your small business needs a website. So, if you have the money perhaps you pay a designer, and if you have the time, you can learn how to build your website yourself.

What Should You Include in Your Website?

There are many factors to consider when building a website. Below we’ll list some important factors to consider if you are designing a new website for your small business.

First things first, a website needs a modern design relative to the industry your small business is in. If you have an old website that hasn’t been updated for a few years, it may be time to update.

Every website needs pictures, and it needs people of actual people from your business. Stay away from stock photos if you can. Google likes unique content and stock photos are not unique. Authenticity is a real factor that Google considers when it comes to Google rankings.

You should include pictures of your warehouse, your team members, and the products you use. When potential customers are calling your business, they expect to talk to real people. So why shouldn’t your business include images of real people too?

Add videos when you can. A video will increase trust among your business and your website visitors. Record a video of your team at work or on the job, and use your smartphone if you have to. You don’t need a professional camera anymore to create a solid video.

Include a call to action on every page of your website that drives viewers to do what you want them to do. This call to action could be call us for a free consultation or call us to answer any questions. Have an intent on every page that drives viewers to the call to action.

Last Point

Lastly, every website should also include a page for every product or service on your website. Also, every page of your website should include a minimum of 750 words of content. The previous minimum target was 500 words, but that won’t cut it anymore. The goal for any home page should be around 2,000 words and a video in order to maximize your results.

You want your website visitors to interact with your content. Have them read your posts and watch your videos. Give your viewers something that will not only keep them interested but something that will keep them on your website.

It’s 2019, if you want to grow a small business you’ll need a website to represent you online so get started today.

2. Create a Google My Business Profile

The next thing you are going to need is a Google My Business listing. Google My Business is a free Google listing that shows your business’ information. It is essential for local SEO success. If you want to grow a small business this is a necessity.

If you want to create your free Google My Business account you can start here.

Create your listing and then claim your listing!

Your profile should look like this once you’re done.

How to Optimize Your GMB (Google My Business) Profile

After you’ve created and claimed your Google My Business profile for your business you need to make sure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) information is correct.

You can create other business listings through business directories to increase the consistency of your NAP for Google. The more the better, but make sure it’s consistent.

These listings help improve your chance of your business appearing in the Google Map Packs. They look like this.

Moving on, now that you’ve created your GMB profile, you need to include your services and have descriptions for each. Remember, we’re trying to beat out your competition, so you need to do what they won’t.

Next, you can add any blog posts that you’ve created. If you don’t have any write some or hire a writer to do it for you.

Next, you need to include photos. These can be of your business, team members, etc. Get creative with them. GMB allows up to 25 photos so take advantage.

You can also include videos. Now, I know a lot of small businesses typically don’t have videos of their business. What you can do is create of video of you going through your business’s testimonials in a slideshow fashion. This will work perfect.

Lastly, you are going to want to turn on the chat feature. GMB allows any chats from your profile to be directed to an SMS number so you can respond right from your phone. This is a great way to communicate with potential customers.

When it comes to Google My Business, a good rule of thumb to follow is if there is a place to fill out information on your business, fill it out.

Google My Business is another extension of your business on the internet and the importance of it can’t be stressed enough.

3. Optimize Your Website for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO, what is it? SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the practice of increasing the visibility of a website in Google search results.

Why is it important? Well, SEO is important for many reasons. The most important factor is increasing the visibility and overall number of website visitors to a business’ website via the Google search results.

Google search results look something like this.

SEO works on a ranking system that ranks websites in a chronological manner with a variety of results for every search term entered in the google search bar. Websites that are best optimized for SEO will receive the highest rankings. A good rule of thumb is to aim for a top 5 position for any given keyword. Approximately, 76% of all search traffic and click throughs to a website go to the top 5 search resultsThat stresses the importance of ranking high for the keywords you are targeting for your small business.

SEO isn’t easy by any means, and it takes time to rank for keywords. By time I mean many months and maybe even a year or two. At Wobu Web, we tell our clients to expect some results in 5-6 months as it takes time to build content, optimize on-page technical stuff, and to build authoritative links.

However, don’t let that discourage you. SEO takes time, but the results that SEO can bring to small businesses are top of the line. SEO can grow a small business into a large business in a relatively short amount of time. The practice of SEO also brings organic traffic to your website meaning that once you acquire that top spot, you’ll receive organic website traffic for time to come. Whereas, if you run Facebook ads, your website traffic ends when you stop paying for ads.

How to Optimize Your Website for SEO

So, how do you optimize a website for SEO? First things first, it starts with the structure and design of your website. You should have numerous pages on the website of your products, services, team, etc. Every page on your website needs a minimum of 750 words per page. Also, if you sell products or services, every single one needs a page of its own.

Think of it like this. If you have two things, let’s say beer and water and you put them together, what happens? They dilute. The same goes with putting the same services or products on the same page.

Next, you need to claim your Google Search Console. Google Search Console includes tools and reports to help you measure your site’s search traffic and performance, fix issues, and make your site shine in Google Search results. It’s a necessity for every website and it should be a priority for yours too. Head over to Google Search Console now and claim yours.

SEO is a very technical process that includes researching keywords, creating content, and building authoritative links. It also takes a very long time. If you don’t have countless hours to optimize your website for SEO, it might be best for you to hire someone that specializes in SEO.  The practice of SEO is a relatively inexpensive strategy given its results that you can add to your business. If you plan on being in business for years to come, SEO is the long-term marketing strategy your small business should be focusing on.
